Self-checkout fraud

Self-checkout fraud is the loss that happens at self-service registers when a shopper skips scanning an item, rings up a cheaper product in place of the real one or uses the terminal scale to pay less. With no cashier alongside, the gap between what was recorded and what was taken goes unchecked.

How it happens

The shopper passes a product over the scanner without registering it, picks a cheaper fruit on the screen than the one in the bag, covers the barcode or stacks two items and scans one. Some cases are distraction and some are deliberate. In both, the terminal records the purchase as completed and paid.

Warning signs

  • Item bagged without a scan

The product goes from the basket to the bagging area with no record at the terminal.

  • Produce code swapped

The selection made on screen does not match the product placed on the scale.

  • Frequent attendant interventions

One terminal calls for weight or item overrides above the store's pattern.

  • Basket bigger than the receipt

The volume leaving self-checkout does not match the quantity recorded.

Where it shows up

It shows up where self-checkout sits alongside staffed lanes, with one attendant covering several terminals and plenty of items weighed at the point of sale.

How the Bewacher agent is designed for it

The agent follows each self-checkout terminal and compares the items seen on video with what the terminal recorded, including the on-screen selection and the weight read by the scale. When the numbers do not add up, the case reaches the store team with the transaction and the video clip, to be handled under the chain's policy. The reading is aggregated and no one is identified.

Frequently asked questions

How do you protect self-checkout without hurting the experience?

The agent reads the purchase without locking the terminal: it compares what passes through the terminal with what was recorded and sends the team only the case that does not add up. Shoppers who scanned everything carry on uninterrupted, and any approach is reserved for a validated discrepancy.

Does the integration work with my chain's self-checkout terminals?

Yes. The integration is built on the front-end system the chain already uses, including the self-checkout software, to receive each recorded item and the weight read. The integration design is defined during the project, based on the vendors in your operation.

Does forgetting to scan an item count as fraud?

The store team decides, under the chain's policy, and the response may simply be guidance for the shopper. The agent points out the gap between what was taken and what was recorded, with video of the moment, without assessing the shopper's intent.
